Grounding techniques for anxiety: 5-4-3-2-1 plus three backups
Grounding is not a personality upgrade. It is a way to finish the sentence “I am here” when the mind is in a future accident. Use it when rumination, panic heat, or a reread message steals the room.
5-4-3-2-1, slowly
5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste (or name a taste you know). Slow is the point. Racing through the list is still rumination with extra steps.
Temperature
Cold water on wrists, ice in a cloth, a warm mug. The nervous system notices temperature faster than it notices a pep talk.
Feet
Both soles on the floor. Press. Name the contact: heel, outer edge, toes. Anxiety lives in the head; weight lives in the feet.
Longer exhale
You already know this from night-anxiety guides. Pair it with grounding so the body and the room change together.
Then one sentence
If the room is back and the story is still loud, send it to Safe Space. Grounding is the on-ramp. Chat and a CBT thought record are the parking space. Android, iOS, and web.
Limits
Grounding will not treat trauma, psychosis, or a medical emergency. If you cannot stay in the room or you are in danger, local emergency services first.
Try 5-4-3-2-1 once today, then park the leftover sentence. Open chat, Google Play, App Store.
